Prosper spans Collin and Denton counties. This guide focuses on the Denton County side, on the town's west, with newer upscale neighborhoods and A-rated Prosper ISD.
Overview
About Prosper (Denton County)
Prosper's first settlers arrived in 1846 to farm cotton. The Rock Hill and Richland settlements merged when the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad came through in 1902. "Richland" was already taken as a post office name, so residents chose Prosper because crops had been so prosperous that year. The town incorporated in 1914.
Prosper grew from 9,423 residents in 2010 to 30,174 at the 2020 census and has kept growing quickly. Homes on the Denton County side pay Denton County taxes and use the Denton Central Appraisal District, and some addresses in and around the west side are in Denton ISD rather than Prosper ISD.
Who Prosper (Denton County) suits

Property taxes
Prosper (Denton County) property tax rates
2025 adopted rates per $100 of taxable value, from the Texas Comptroller:

|---|---|
| Denton County | $0.1859 |
| City of Prosper | $0.5050 |

Your actual bill depends on the appraised value, exemptions and any special districts.
Special districts (hospital, college, emergency services, MUD/PID and others) are not included and vary by property. Appraisal district: Denton County. This is general information, not tax advice.
