Living in Argyle

Argyle keeps a small-town, horse-country feel on larger lots, with Argyle ISD schools and quick I-35W access to both Denton and Fort Worth.

Overview

About Argyle

European settlement in the Argyle area began in the 1850s, when the place was known as Pilot Knob or Waintown. The community was renamed Argyle in 1881 after the Texas and Pacific Railroad built through. Some say a railroad surveyor named it after a garden in France, others after Argyll in Scotland.

Local legend says outlaw Sam Bass hid stolen gold in a cave in the area. Argyle grew slowly for a century, with grist mills, general stores and a cotton gin. It had 4,403 residents at the 2020 census and has grown since.

Property taxes

Argyle property tax rates

2025 adopted rates per $100 of taxable value, from the Texas Comptroller:

Taxing unitRate per $100
Denton County$0.1859
City of Argyle$0.3431
Argyle ISD$1.1727
Combined (before special districts)$1.7017

Example only: on a home appraised at the typical Argyle value of $598,121, the combined rate works out to about $10,178 a year before exemptions. A homestead exemption lowers the school-tax portion (school districts must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value, with an additional $60,000 for owners 65 or older or disabled, per the Texas Comptroller). Your actual bill depends on the appraised value, exemptions and any special districts.

Special districts (hospital, college, emergency services, MUD/PID and others) are not included and vary by property. Appraisal district: Denton County. This is general information, not tax advice.
